Happy 300th Birthday Richard Price!
Dr Richard Price – Welsh philosopher, minister and mathematician, supporter of the American and French revolutions, considered “the greatest Welsh thinker of all time”.
Born in the Welsh village of Llangeinor in 1723, the son of a dissenting minister, Price spent much of his own life as minister to Newington Green Meeting House, which became a hub for liberal and radical religion and politics, attracting people like the feminist pioneer Mary Wollstonecraft.
Price supported the American and French Revolutions, bringing him fame and infamy in Britain. Through his actions, words and writings – including ‘Observations on the Nature of Civil Liberty’ (1776) and ‘A Discourse on the Love of Our Country’ (1789) – Price helped the cause of liberty at home and abroad.
He died in London in 1791 and his funeral sermon was preached by the radical preacher and scientist, Joseph Priestley.
