Online Event: ‘Religious Same-Sex Marriage: Why It Matters’ – 4 Aug 2021
Online Event: ‘Religious Same-Sex Marriage: Why It Matters’
Wednesday 4 August, 7pm
You are invited to join experts, campaigners and same-sex couples who have married in church to an online event exploring why religious same-sex marriage matters.
• Academic experts Dr Silvia Falcetta (University of York), Prof. Paul Johnson (University of York) and Robert M. Vanderbeck (University of Leeds).
• Former Unitarian Chief Officer, Derek McAuley, who led the Unitarian campaign for religious same-sex marriage, and current Unitarian Chief Officer, Liz Slade.
• Same-sex couples who have married in church.
There are only 274 places of worship in England and Wales which will marry same-sex couples (around 1% of all places of worship), despite the law changing to allow such ceremonies in 2013.
99 of those 274 are Unitarian and Free Christian churches, chapels and meeting houses, making the Unitarians the largest denomination offering religious same-sex marriage ceremonies in England and Wales.
Silvia Falcetta, Paul Johnson and Robert M. Vanderbeck are experts on religious same-sex marriage. Their most recent research on the subject is ‘The Experience of Religious Same-Sex Marriage in England and Wales: Understanding the Opportunities and Limits Created by the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013’ (2021).
